#1 Tip for Panic Attacks
Don't Fight Panic
Often times resisting or fighting the initial onset of panic attacks is likely to make them worse. Try to avoid tensing up in reaction to anxiety or panic symptoms that may arise. Also, trying to make them go away by suppressing them or gritting your teeth can make them worse.
Do not mistake being active with becoming passive. You should continue to be active in your education of this ailment and what causes them. One of the worst things you can do is to become overly passive by taking too many prescription drugs to cope.
If there is one thing I want you to remember when reading this, it's this... prescription drugs do not treat the panic it only masks the problem. You must learn what is going on inside your body so that you can better deal with them when they happen.
Another reason fighting the fear instead of accepting it for what it is, is that the fear of having an attack can actually cause you to have a panic attack. Fighting the onset of the fear can actually be much more detrimental than accepting it.
Let me give you a few instances that may relate to what happens when you fight panic attacks. I'm sure you've heard of what happens when you step in quick sand, right? You begin to sink. The first urge you have is to struggle to get out, but the more you struggle- the faster you sink. Another analogy is a natural whirlpool. An individual's natural reaction is to try to escape by swimming against the current but this only sucks you deeper under water. The easiest way to escape the grasp of a whirlpool is to swim with the current, although this defies all logic. There is also that little toy that many of us had as kids called the Chinese finger cuffs. Many of us remember the first time we put our fingers inside the cuffs. When we tried to pull them out, the tighter they became. It seemed the more we struggled to free ourselves from their grasp, the tighter the grasp became. These are all analogies to panic attacks.
Basically, panic attacks should be dealt with the same way. Don't fight them! Just let them come and go and your body will finally realize there is no real danger and they will subside
